Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery) Recovery

Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery) Recovery

Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)

Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery) Recovery Manassas | Middleburg | Prince WilliamEyelid surgery, which is clinically called blepharoplasty, involves a basic recovery period like most other cosmetic surgery procedures. Patients should be aware about the estimated recovery time and should know what to expect during the recovery period. An experienced facial plastic surgeon will discuss all aspects of eyelid surgery during the initial consultation, including the expected recovery process.

As a board certified facial plastic surgeon, Dr. Trang Vo-Nguyen (Dr. V) provides eyelid surgery among various other procedures. She receives patients from in Chantilly, Northern Virginia, Loudoun County, Fairfax, Prince William, Fauquier, Arlington, Middleburg, Leesburg, Manassas, Warrenton, and surrounding communities.

Immediate Post-op Condition

The patient may receive eyelid surgery as an outpatient procedure or, in some cases an overnight stay at the hospital may be involved. The surgeon will determine the appropriate environment for immediate recovery according to the circumstances of the case. Cold compresses and lubricating ointment may be applied following the surgery. In some cases, the eyes will be gently covered with bandages.

The surgeon will provide clear instructions regarding how to care for the eyes during the recovery period. Medications may be prescribed to promote early healing, reduce the risk of infection and manage the pain. The patient will also be provided with a date for first follow-up visit to the surgeon’s office. Bruising, swelling, irritation or dry eye conditions may occur during the initial healing period, which can be managed with ointment, medication and cold compresses. Eye drops may be used to prevent dry eyes.

First Few Weeks of Recovery

During the first week of recovery, the patient should avoid activities that strain the eyes, including reading, watching TV, using computer, or wearing contact lens. These activities can result in dry eyes. Bruising and swelling can be minimized by keeping the head in a raised position during the first few days. Sutures may be removed in about five to seven days. After the first week, most patients will be ready to resume their regular activities or return to work.

Dr. V strongly advises her patients in in Chantilly, Northern Virginia, Loudoun County, Fairfax, Prince William, Fauquier, Arlington, Middleburg, Leesburg, Manassas, Warrenton, and other areas to wear dark sunglasses for at least the first two to four weeks. This will protect the eyes against irritation caused by sun and wind. Eyes may get tired easily during the first few weeks, so frequent naps will help.

Activities such as bending, heavy lifting, sports or exercises should be avoided for about three to four weeks following eyelid surgery. This will help avoid the possibility of increased blood flow to the eyes. The surgeon will advise the patient a suitable time frame when vigorous exercises or activities may be resumed.

Length of Recovery Period

Full recovery following blepharoplasty will usually take several weeks. Swelling and redness occurring after the surgery will gradually disappear. Most patients will be able to go back to their workplace in about seven to 10 days. Gradually, the eyes will appear younger and more alert, which will make the patient feel better and more confident.

Types of Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)

Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)

Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery) Surgeon Northern Virginia | Fairfax VAEyelid surgery or blepharoplasty is one of the most effective procedures to restore a more youthful and rested appearance of the eyes. Dr. Trang Vo-Nguyen (Dr. V) is a board certified facial plastic surgeon, which puts her in a strong position to perform intricate and highly specialized procedures such as eyelid surgery.

Eyelid surgery may be broadly categorized into lower and upper blepharoplasty. A separate classification may also be given to ethnic blepharoplasty because of the typical eye-related features of ethnic patients. Patients in in Chantilly, Northern Virginia, Loudoun County, Fairfax, Prince William, Fauquier, Arlington, Middleburg, Leesburg, Manassas, Warrenton, and nearby areas have an opportunity to receive these surgeries from Dr. V.

Who is Suited for Upper and Lower Blepharoplasty?

Upper eyelid surgery may be more suited for patients who suffer from significant drooping of the upper lids, which can cause an obstruction in their field of vision. Lower eyelid surgery will be more effective in cases where the patient is keen to reduce the appearance of droopy or puffy lower eyelids. In certain cases, the plastic surgeon may recommend both lower and upper eyelid lift to meet the patient’s aesthetic goals.

Lower Blepharoplasty

Lower eyelid lift will usually involve surgical removal of excess fat tissue that exists underneath the eye. When this excess fat is removed along with loose skin, it will help achieve a firmer, smoother, and more youthful looking surface above the cheek area. Furthermore, lower eyelid surgery may be supported by additional procedures such as facial fillers or fat transfer to reverse the appearance of a sunken facial look.

Transconjunctival Blepharoplasty

If the patient does not have a very conspicuous problem of bags beneath the eyes, they may not require tightening of underlying muscles or even removal of excess skin. The procedure will only involve small incisions made inside the eyelid through which the surgeon will remove unwanted pockets of fat. This procedure will avoid any kind of visible scarring.

As an experienced facial plastic surgeon, Dr. V will carefully evaluate whether patient needs upper, lower or transconjunctival eyelid surgery. She receives patients from in Chantilly, Northern Virginia, Loudoun County, Fairfax, Prince William, Fauquier, Arlington, Middleburg, Leesburg, Manassas, Warrenton, and surrounding areas for these procedures.

Upper Blepharoplasty

The appearance of saggy and inflated upper eyelids can be corrected with upper eyelid surgery. The procedure involves removal of loose skin and fat tissue to restore a more refreshed and rested look of the eyes.

The procedure involves an incision that is placed along the natural crease of the upper lids to make the scarring inconspicuous. Loose skin in the upper lids that may be contributing to vision obstruction as well as a saggy or tired look will be trimmed away. Muscle tightening may also be performed in some cases.

Asian Blepharoplasty

Asian upper lid anatomy will typically differ from that of the Caucasian eyelid. Nearly half of the Asian patients may have little or no crease showing in their upper eyelid. Customized eyelid procedure designed to enhance the appearance of the eyelid may be performed.
