Achieve a Balanced, Harmonious Appearance With Expert Rhinoplasty in Virginia

Your nose defines your facial appearance. An oversized or crooked nose may be caused by genetics, injury, or illness and people who are self-conscious about their nose often find it difficult to interact comfortably with society.

Rhinoplasty is one of the most popular plastic surgeries in the US with close to 200,000 cases dealt with within a single year. It involves nasal reshaping to achieve structural stability or cosmetic appeal. Thus, it is also known by the name of nose reshaping surgery or more simply 'nose job'.

Whether you have an unflattering bump on the bridge of your nose or you feel your nose is not the right shape, Dr. Vo-Nguyen (Dr. V) is a must-have facial plastic surgeon to consult with. Her experience with preserving your ethnic identity and bringing harmony to your face is unparalleled - see some of her patient cases here.

    What Is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is a plastic surgery procedure to improve the proportion, shape, size, or overall appearance of the nose in harmony with the face. Sometimes the surgeon may use rhinoplasty to correct certain functional anomalies that may be obstructing breathing or other difficulties.

The majority of patients opting for rhinoplasty are unhappy with the shape or appearance of their nose and search for a permanent improvement. Rhinoplasty can also heal difficulties in breathing or general functioning of the nasal cavity due to structural abnormalities.

While nose surgery is one of the most gratifying aesthetic procedures, it is also one of the intricate ones. A customized surgical plan must be created to match with the unique aesthetic needs of a patient. Each nose has a different shape and size, and this must be taken into consideration during each surgery.

Dr. Trang Vo-Nguyen (Dr. V) of the Virginia Institute is a board-certified facial plastic surgeon providing advanced rhinoplasty and other procedures to patients in Chantilly, Northern Virginia. She also sees patients from Loudoun County, Washington DC, Fairfax, Prince William, Fauquier, Arlington, Middleburg, Leesburg, Manassas, Warrenton, and nearby areas.

Ready To Treat These Common Nasal Concerns?

For patients in Virginia, rhinoplasty can address many nasal concerns, including a prominent hump, wide bridge, crooked nose, overly projected tip, or breathing issues. If any of these conditions are something you struggle with, Dr. V will provide you with an individualized approach that offers balance and refined contours to enhance both the form and function of your nose.

    Nose Bumps

Rhinoplasty surgery smooths out bumps along the nasal bridge, enhancing your facial symmetry while smoothing out your nose.

    Crooked Nose

For those with a crooked or asymmetrical nose, nose job surgery corrects structural irregularities, which results in a more aligned, symmetrical appearance.

    Wide Bridge

A broad nasal bridge can contribute to an overall larger appearance of the nose. Rhinoplasty can address this by narrowing and reshaping the bridge, creating more balanced facial proportions and a refined, harmonious profile.

    Overly Projected Tip

Rhinoplasty can adjust an overly projected nose tip, bringing it into harmony with the rest of your features for a more refined look.

    Functional or Cosmetic Rhinoplasty

Dr. V's rhinoplasty surgery for Virginia patients may be performed to correct aesthetic or functional anomalies, or both in some cases. Open or closed rhinoplasty techniques are available to perform the procedure.

    Functional Rhinoplasty

One of the most common functional concerns related to the nose is a deviated septum, which can lead to obstruction in the nasal airway, causing difficulties in breathing. In some cases, functional rhinoplasty may also be required to address the oversized internal bones or turbinates, or collapsed nasal passages. Many times, Dr. V will recommend functional rhinoplasty in combination with aesthetic enhancement of the nose to produce comprehensive and stellar results.

    Cosmetic Rhinoplasty

Cosmetic rhinoplasty is more popular, using only aesthetic improvements to make the overall facial appearance more balanced and attractive. This procedure may involve refining the nasal tip, straightening the dorsum or the nose length, reducing nostril size, increasing the dorsum size, subduing a prominent dorsal hump, reducing nasal width, or changing the overall size of the nose.

    Open and Closed Rhinoplasty

In the case of open rhinoplasty, the surgeon will place the incision across the columella, or the delicate column of tissue that separates the nostrils. The incision will extend into the inside of the nostrils from where the surgeon will retract the skin by separating it from cartilage and bone. The advantage with open surgery is that the surgeon can view the anatomy clearly and correct the anomalies to achieve desirable aesthetic results.

In the case of closed rhinoplasty, the incisions are made inside the nostrils, which means that no scarring is visible from the outside. The nasal skin is not lifted, and the corrections are performed through the internal incisions. The recovery period involved is quicker in this case, and the results can be very similar to that of open rhinoplasty.

Discover Your Options For Rhinoplasty in Virginia

Dr. V offers both surgical and non-surgical rhinoplasty options to meet your diverse needs, whether you want subtle adjustments or a transformative change. Schedule a consultation at our Northern Virginia office to explore which approach is right for you to achieve your dream results!

    Primary Rhinoplasty

Reduction rhinoplasty reshapes the nose to create balanced proportions, often addressing bumps, elongated tips, and wide nostrils by removing bone and cartilage. Alar base reduction may be used to refine nostril size. Augmentation rhinoplasty, on the other hand, adds cartilage or synthetic material to enhance the nasal tip.

    Revision Rhinoplasty

If a prior rhinoplasty didn't achieve your desired results, Dr. V's expertise in revision rhinoplasty offers a sophisticated solution. She carefully assesses structural issues, asymmetries, or aesthetic concerns left unresolved from previous procedures. Then, through her meticulous approach, Dr. V. works to restore balance, create subtle improvements, and deliver outcomes aligned with your aesthetic goals from your original rhinoplasty procedure.

    Reconstruction Rhinoplasty

Reconstructive Rhinoplasty is used to completely reconstruct noses that have been extensively or completely damaged by a major accident. It is also used to treat conditions resulting from skin cancer. Various techniques and advanced methods are employed to fully reconstruct the nose. Skilled surgeons will use crafted models as references before starting the actual surgery.

    Preservation Rhinoplasty

Preservation rhinoplasty focuses on maintaining natural nasal structures while making refinements to enhance facial harmony. This technique preserves key support elements, such as the nasal cartilage and bone, leading to a natural, balanced look. Dr. V uses her expertise to achieve subtle, lasting improvements prioritizing both form and function for results that blend with your natural features.

    Ultrasonic Piezo Rhinoplasty

Dr. V uses advanced Piezo technology in ultrasonic rhinoplasty, which reshapes the nasal bones and cartilage with controlled precision. Unlike traditional tools, Piezo's ultrasonic vibrations selectively target hard tissue, leaving nearby soft tissues undisturbed. This focused approach not only enhances surgical accuracy but also minimizes trauma to surrounding areas, which significantly reduces swelling and bruising.

    Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty

Non-surgical rhinoplasty uses dermal fillers to enhance and reshape the nose without surgery. This treatment can smooth bumps, lift the tip, or add definition with immediate results and minimal recovery time given the lack of surgery. If you're seeking subtle, temporary changes, this procedure is a great option for you!

    Detail Oriented, Meticulous Skill

Dr. V has been detail-oriented throughout her distinguished career! As she honed her skills through her medical training, she was selected for a Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Fellowship at Louisiana State University, which is a prestigious honor for those training in the medical field.

She has used the training she received throughout her education to become one of the leading plastic surgeons in the nation! She is board-certified by both the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and the American Board of Otolaryngology. In addition, she is the founder and current Medical Director of The Virginia Institute for Surgical Arts in Chantilly, Virginia.

    A Holistic Approach

While Dr. V's professional accolades are quite impressive, what truly sets her apart from other surgeons is her approach. Her rhinoplasty goes beyond just reshaping the nose, for Dr. V it's about achieving harmony across your entire face. With her deep understanding of facial anatomy and an artistic eye, she evaluates each patient's unique features to create a balanced, natural result. By viewing the face as a cohesive whole rather than isolating the nose, Dr. V combines advanced surgical techniques with a strategic perspective. Whether through precise rhinoplasty methods or integrating complementary procedures, she ensures the outcome enhances your overall appearance while celebrating your individuality.

Results That Reflect Your Natural Beauty

Dr. V understands how hard it can be to constantly be self-conscious about a nose that doesn't feel like it "fits" your face. That's why she works tirelessly to deliver results that will have you loving what you're seeing in the mirror! With subtle enhancements to the nose, Dr. V can not only change your nose shape but elevate the way all your features interact with one another. Ready for these results for yourself?

Nose Job Surgery With Dr. V: What To Expect

Dr. V customizes each rhinoplasty procedure to suit your unique needs and guides you through a seamless process from initial consultation to post-surgery recovery. When you visit Dr. V at the Virginia Institute for Surgical Arts, you can expect clear communication, compassionate care, and exceptional results!

    Initial Rhinoplasty Consultation

The pre-operative consultation phase is the key first step in the rhinoplasty procedure. Dr. V and her medical team will review your general health, the condition of the nose in relation to other facial features, and any functional and aesthetic anomalies of the nose, and perform a few diagnostic or medical tests if necessary. Your medical and surgical history, including any previous nasal breathing problems and sinus infections, will also be evaluated. Dr. V will assess the quality of the nasal skin, and consider any issues that can make the surgery unsafe. Instructions will be provided concerning smoking, medications, and other preoperative precautions.

    Pre-Surgery Preparation

Preparation is essential for a successful rhinoplasty! During your preparation, Dr. V will provide thorough instructions to ensure the smoothest procedure process. A few guidelines to expect include avoiding certain medications, such as aspirin or ibuprofen, avoiding alcohol, and no eating or drinking at least eight hours before your procedure.

    Dr. V's Rhinoplasty Procedure

Rhinoplasty is often performed using light general anesthesia or local anesthesia with IV sedation and takes approximately three hours to perform. The anesthesia method will be decided 24 hours before your surgery. In a rhinoplasty surgery, Dr. V begins by making carefully planned incisions, either within the nostrils (closed rhinoplasty) or across the columella, the tissue strip between the nostrils (open rhinoplasty). Through these incisions, Dr. V gains access to the underlying nasal structure, which consists of bone and cartilage. To reshape the nose, Dr. V may remove or contour cartilage and bone, smooth or reduce dorsal humps, and, if necessary, reposition the nasal bones to improve symmetry. In augmentation cases, grafts of cartilage—often harvested from the septum, ear, or rib—are strategically placed to build up the nasal structure. Once the reshaping is complete, the nasal tissues are redraped over the modified structure, and incisions are meticulously closed with sutures. In an open procedure, fine sutures are used across the columella to minimize visible scarring. Internal splints or soft packing may be placed to support the nose as it heals, and a nasal cast or splint is usually applied externally to stabilize the new shape. Following the rhinoplasty procedure, the patient will spend at least one hour in the recovery area under the monitoring of medical staff. Most patients can return home the same day after a few hours under observation.

    Post-Surgery Follow-Up

Dr. V offers comprehensive follow-up care, monitoring recovery closely and ensuring healing progresses as planned. You will receive detailed guidance for a smooth, comfortable recovery at every step on your journey through nose job recovery.

    Social Readiness

Swelling of the nose and bruising around your eyes may occur. These symptoms will gradually decrease over several weeks and cold compresses are encouraged for 24 to 48 hours after surgery to help minimize swelling and discomfort. Activities that may cause injury to your nose should be avoided six weeks following your surgery.

    Virginia Rhinoplasty Recovery

    • Week 1: You can expect swelling, bruising, and nasal congestion during the first few days after surgery. Most patients have their splint removed within a week and begin feeling more comfortable.
    • Weeks 2-3: Bruising has typically resolved, and much of the initial swelling has improved. Many patients feel ready to return to work, social events, and other routine activities.
    • Weeks 4-6: The nose continues to heal and refine. Most patients can gradually resume more strenuous activities, although protecting the nose from impact remains important.
    • Months 2-6: Residual swelling continues to decrease, revealing greater definition and contour. The nose begins to look more natural as healing progresses.
    • Up to 1 Year: Final rhinoplasty results emerge gradually as the remaining swelling resolves. The refined nasal shape becomes fully apparent, with results designed to be long-lasting.

Am I A Good Candidate For a Nose Job?

Most of the candidates who seek nose reshaping surgery are unhappy with the appearance of their nose and want to improve the harmony of their facial features. A smaller number of rhinoplasty candidates are individuals who suffer from breathing obstructions or discomfort due to previous nose injuries or structural abnormalities.

The optimal candidate for nose surgery will be an adult in suitable general health, having clear aesthetic goals and realistic expectations, and recognizing the potential risks and complications associated with rhinoplasty. Such candidates will also be fully committed to following the surgeon's instructions from pre-operative consultation to post-operative recovery.

    Teen Candidates

One of the most popular cosmetic surgeries among teens is rhinoplasty. However, not every teen may be a suitable candidate for this procedure. The surgeon and the teenage patient should carefully consider whether or not rhinoplasty is an appropriate cosmetic surgery option. The surgeon should ensure that the decision to receive nose surgery is the teen patient's own choice, rather than an outcome of parental or peer pressure.

Most surgeons recommend that girls should wait until the age of 14 or 15, and boys should wait another few years before they decide to undergo rhinoplasty. Irrespective of the reason for rhinoplasty, it is critical to ensure that the nose has developed completely before the surgery is performed.

Risks and Side Effects of Rhinoplasty Surgery

Rhinoplasty, while generally safe, may carry some risks, including:

      • Swelling
      • Bruising
      • Minor Bleeding
      • Infection

However, Dr. V takes every precaution possible to minimize complications. During your initial consultation, she will discuss potential risks and set realistic expectations with you. Also, as the Founder and Medical Director of The Virginia Institute for Surgical Arts, Dr. V brings top-notch surgical excellence to every procedure she performs and works tirelessly to minimize these risks as much as possible.

      Recovering From Rhinoplasty

The recovery period may be around one week, but the swelling may continue to exist for several weeks. Full effects of the procedure appear gradually, and it may take up to a year for the reshaped nasal contour to refine fully. The results of rhinoplasty are usually permanent. You will be required to follow the general guidelines provided by the surgeon in order to protect your nose from shocks or undesirable discrepancies.
