CHIN AUGMENTATION SURGERY (CHIN IMPLANT)
Chin augmentation (chin implant) is a surgical procedure that is designed to enhance the proportions and structural balance of the facial profile, and is often performed as a corrective procedure for patients who present with a receding or “weak” chin. During a chin augmentation surgery, a silicone or biocompatible implant is placed as a means of increasing the dimensions of the lower jaw. The chin implant serves to elongate the face and creates the appearance of a stronger and/or wider chin, which translates to a more prominent jawline and symmetrically balanced face. Many patients elect to undergo chin implant surgery as a permanent cosmetic enhancement measure after first trying temporary chin augmentation options (i.e. temporary soft-tissue dermal fillers).

CHIN AUGMENTATION PROCEDURE
Because chin implants are offered in a variety of shapes, sizes, and materials, chin augmentation surgery is highly customizable, and can be tailored to fulfill the unique aesthetic preferences of each patient. After assessing your facial bone structure and listening to your surgical objectives and aesthetic preferences, Dr. V will work collaboratively with you to select the optimal chin implant option and surgical technique for your specific anatomy and cosmetic goals.
Chin augmentation surgery is typically performed in an outpatient setting under IV sedation or general anesthesia, and takes approximately 30-60 minutes (unless it is performed in conjunction with other facial enhancement surgeries). During the chin augmentation procedure, Dr. V will make a small incision inside the mouth (for biocompatible implants) or under the chin (for silicone implants), and will then create a pocket directly over the lower jawbone to accommodate the implant. After placing the implant inside the pocket, Dr. V. will affix it to the bone or soft tissue in order to secure its placement prior to closing the incision.
CHIN AUGMENTATION RECOVERY
After chin implant surgery, pain medications are provided to relieve any soreness and swelling, and the chin is taped to prevent the implant from shifting as a result of post-surgical swelling in the jaw region (elevating the head also helps minimize swelling). Patients should arrange for someone to drive them home after the procedure; however, most individuals are able to resume light activities after the anesthesia wears off. It is common for chin implant patients to experience the minor side effect of temporary numbness in the lower lip region, which is similar to what one might experience after receiving novocaine at a dentist appointment. Patients whose incisions were closed with dissolvable stitches placed inside of the mouth (as with biocompatible implants) will be restricted to a soft or liquid diet for a few days after surgery. The dissolvable stitches utilized for biocompatible implants will naturally dissolve within several weeks. Patients whose chin augmentation involved a silicone implant (incision under the chin) will return to Dr. V’s office in approximately one week in order to have the stitches removed.
