Consultation
The pre-operative consultation phase is the key first step in the rhinoplasty procedure. If the surgeon invests a fair amount of time at this stage, it will have a positive impact on the final outcome of the procedure. The surgeon and their medical team will review the general health condition, condition of the nose in relation to other facial features, any functional and aesthetic anomalies of the nose, and perform a few diagnostic or medical tests if necessary.
The patient’s medical and surgical history, including any previous nasal breathing problems and sinus infections will be evaluated. The surgeon will assess the quality of the nasal skin, and consider any issues that can make the surgery unsafe. Instructions will be provided with regard to smoking, medications and other pre-operative precautions.
Surgical Plan
The surgeon will carefully listen to the patient’s unique aesthetic concerns, goals and aspirations with regard to their nose and face. This feedback will be correlated with other factors evaluated during the initial consultation to create a customized surgical plan for rhinoplasty.
The plan would incorporate aspects such as narrowing of the nostrils, reshaping the nasal tip, removing a hump from the nasal bridge, straightening a crooked nose, or adjusting the angle between the nose and the upper lip.

Procedure
Anesthesia or IV Sedation
Rhinoplasty procedure is often performed using light general anesthesia or local anesthesia with IV sedation. The patient will be monitored closely throughout the surgical procedure. Anesthesia procedure will be approved a day in advance with the anesthetist reviewing the patient’s medical records to determine their fitness for the procedure.
Surgery
Rhinoplasty will be performed as an open or closed surgery, depending on the extent of alterations involved. The surgeon will add, remove or modify tissue or synthetic implants during the procedure. In case of open rhinoplasty, the skin will be lifted off the nasal structure to expose the underlying tissue. In case of closed rhinoplasty, the incisions will be hidden within the nostrils.
Closed rhinoplasty is less invasive and leaves no visible scarring. But the procedure must only be performed by an expert facial plastic surgeon because it is more intricate and offers little visibility to the surgeon. Once the procedure is completed, the surgeon will close the incisions with sutures and apply bandages.
Aftercare
Following the rhinoplasty procedure, the patient will spend at least one hour in the recovery area under the monitoring of medical staff. Most patients can return home the same day after a few hours under observation.
