What is Asian Rhinoplasty?
Asian rhinoplasty includes plastic surgery procedures that are designed to enhance the appearance of the nose in Asian patients, without compromising the essential ethnicity of the face. It is imperative that such a procedure should be performed by a surgeon with specific experience in ethnic rhinoplasty.
The aesthetic needs and goals of Asian patients are typically different from those of Caucasian patients. Silicone implant augmentation is one of the common procedures required in Asian rhinoplasty. Wherever possible, the surgeon may use patient’s cartilage from ear, nose or ribs to augment the nose to the desired size and shape.
Anatomy of the Asian Nose
The average Asian nose is typically wider when compared to a Caucasian nose. The projection of the nose is shorter and less prominent. The dorsum is generally less projecting and the nasal bridge is also lower. The nasal tip may be rounder or poorly defined, or less projecting in the Asian nose. In some cases, such as in the case of Japanese patients, the dorsum may have a convex shape.
The base of the nose is wider in relation to the height of the nose, and the labionasal angle may be sharper. Therefore, Dr. V ensures that her patients in and around Chantilly, Northern Virginia, Loudoun County, Fairfax, Prince William, Fauquier, Arlington, Middleburg, Leesburg, Manassas, and Warrenton receive customized treatment based on the specific ethnic anatomy and aesthetic goals of a patient.
Common Asian Rhinoplasty Procedures
Augmenting the dorsum and sharpening of the nasal tip projection are two of the common nose procedures that Asian patients typically ask for. Concomitant nasal lengthening may also be needed, if the patient has a flat and short nose. Dorsal hump and nasal tip reduction procedures may not be required by most Asian patients. Nose augmentation in case of Asian rhinoplasty may be performed with silicone implants or using patient’s own cartilage.
Nose Augmentation with Implants
Silicone implants are used by many plastic surgeons who are focused on Asian rhinoplasty procedures. Patients with Chinese, Japanese, Korean, or Taiwanese ethnic origins may be looking to increase the size of their nose in harmony with the rest of the face. Some surgeons prefer silicone implant based augmentation, particularly if they believe that the outcome will be more enhanced with it.
Compared to an autologus surgery, involving patient’s own cartilage, the surgery with silicone implants can be less complicated and avoiding the risk of donor site morbidity. However, in some cases, the surgeon may prefer autologus rhinoplasty, if the outcome may be more effective with this technique.
