Eyes constitute a prominent feature of the face from an aesthetic point of view. If the eyes appear droopy, tired, angry or weary, the overall appearance of the face may look fatigued, old or tired. Therefore, an aesthetic procedure for the eyes to rejuvenate their appearance can have a dramatic positive impact for the entire face. Blepharoplasty, popularly known as eyelid lift surgery, can be performed on the upper or lower eyelids or both, depending on the unique needs of a patient.
The Virginia Institute of Surgical Arts is a state of the art facility for a range of latest, proven and safe facial surgery procedures, including eyelid lift surgery. The practice is headed by Dr. Trang Vo-Nguyen (Dr. V), who is an eminent board certified facial plastic surgeon. Dr. V provides upper and lower blepharoplasty and other procedures to patients in Chantilly, Northern Virginia, Loudoun County, Fairfax, Prince William, Fauquier, Arlington, Middleburg, Leesburg, Manassas, Warrenton, and surrounding communities.
Types of Blepharoplasty
Blepharoplasty can be broadly classified into upper, lower and functional eyelid surgeries. Droopy eyelids are the leading cause why most patients seek these procedures. However, some patients may require blepharoplasty to remove ptosis, which may affect one or both the eyes. Ptosis may occur by birth or when the edge of the eyelid margin falls from its natural position due to aging, sun exposure, gravitational pull or other factors.
Upper Blepharoplasty
Upper eyelid surgery is designed to elevate the upper eyelid marginally in case loose skin is causing it to droop. An incision will be marked within the natural fold of the upper eyelid and will extend beyond the outer corner into other creases. The surgeon will remove loose skin and fatty tissue through the incision in order to reduce upper eyelid puffiness.
Patients in Chantilly, Northern Virginia, Loudoun County, Fairfax, Prince William, Fauquier, Arlington, Middleburg, Leesburg, Manassas, Warrenton, and nearby areas have an opportunity to receive this procedure from Dr. V.
Lower Blepharoplasty
The surgeon may perform lower eyelid surgery using the transconjunctival technique, which will involve an incision placed inside the lower eyelid. Excess skin and fat will be removed or the fat redistribution will be done through the incision. Some patients may also need correction of muscle laxity through the incision. In some cases, the surgeon may combine traditional lower eyelid surgery with laser treatment to achieve effective tightening of the lower eyelid.
Functional Blepharoplasty
As opposed to aesthetic eyelid surgery, a functional blepharoplasty is performed to correct medical conditions. Most patients may seek this procedure if they are suffering from partial vision obstruction due to loose eyelid skin. Functional eyelid can remove excess skin from the upper eyelid in case it is drooping low enough to cause vision impairment. Some patients may find it difficult to wear glasses or contact lenses due to droopy upper eyelid, which will also require this procedure.
Sometimes the surgeon may recommend a combination of aesthetic and functional blepharoplasty to achieve more comprehensive outcomes. The procedure should ideally be performed by an experienced facial plastic surgeon to achieve safe and desirable outcomes.
