Blepharoplasty, commonly called eyelid surgery, is a cosmetic surgery procedure designed to rejuvenate the appearance of eyes through surgical removal of excess skin and fat from the upper and lower eyelids. In some cases, the underlying muscles may also be tightened. The procedure may be performed on upper or lower or both eyelids, as per the patient’s needs.
Dr. Trang Vo-Nguyen (Dr. V) is a board certified facial plastic surgeon providing blepharoplasty and other procedures. As eyelid surgery is a highly sensitive procedure, Dr. V’s expertise in facial plastic surgery puts her in a strong position to perform this surgery with safe and predictable results. Dr. V receives patients from Chantilly, Northern Virginia, Loudoun County, Fairfax, Prince William, Fauquier, Arlington, Middleburg, Leesburg, Manassas, Warrenton, and surrounding communities.
Candidacy
Individuals who are bothered by the appearance of tired or droopy eyes that can make the person look older than their actual age may be good candidates for blepharoplasty. In some cases, the person may also be suffering from ptosis, which can be corrected along with eyelid surgery. Excessive droopy eyelid skin can also cause vision obstruction in some cases. All such candidates can benefit from blepharoplasty procedure.
Upper Eyelid Surgery
An upper blepharoplasty procedure is aimed at elevating the position of the upper eyelid slightly. This may be required if the excessive or loose skin is causing the upper eyelid to droop due to heaviness. In this procedure, the incision is typically concealed within the natural fold of the upper eyelid and may extend slightly beyond the outside corner of the eye.
Loose skin and fatty tissue will be removed through the incision. Puffiness in the upper eyelids can be reduced when excess fat deposits are removed or redistributed. Dr. V receives patients from Chantilly, Northern Virginia, Loudoun County, Fairfax, Prince William, Fauquier, Arlington, Middleburg, Leesburg, Manassas, Warrenton, and nearby locations for this procedure.
Lower Eyelid Surgery
Lower blepharoplasty may be performed externally or through the inside of the lower eyelid, which is called the transconjunctival technique. Excess fat and skin are removed through the incision or the fat may be redistributed. Muscle laxity may be addressed by removing excess muscle.
If the incision is placed inside the lower eyelid, the scar will be completely invisible. In some cases, the cosmetic surgeon may combine laser technique with lower eyelid surgery to tighten the loose skin and achieve more comprehensive results.
Functional Eyelid Surgery
A functional blepharoplasty may be performed for medical reasons. If excess skin from the upper eyelid droops significantly and causes partial vision impairment, or the patient finds it difficult to wear contact lenses or glasses, the surgeon may recommend functional eyelid surgery. Once the droopiness is reduced from the eyelids, the vision is improved because of a less obstructed field of view.
Recovery
Initial swelling and bruising following the eyelid surgery will subside significantly in the first week. Most patients may be able to return to their workplace or resume their regular activities at home after the first week. However, complete swelling will go away gradually and full effects of the procedure will become visible over a period of several months.
