Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)Eyes are the windows to our soul, goes the popular adage. However, the windows tend to need some repair after a certain point in time to keep up with the ageless soul. This is where Blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery comes into the picture. Ptosis or droopy eyelids usually affects old people, wherein the tendon of the muscle responsible for lifting the eyelid stretches and fails to function. Congenital Ptosis is the presence of droopy lids in a person since birth. People suffering from both the conditions can benefit from  blepharoplasty wherein the sagging skin around the eyes is tightened to achieve a youthful appearance.

How can blepharoplasty help you?

Blepharoplasty is the ultimate solution for problems ranging from fat deposits in the upper and lower lids to excess skin and muscle on either lids that make them droopy. An upper eyelid surgery is done by creating incisions on the skin through, after which the fat is removed. It is followed by the stitching up of the skin that creates an eyelid crease.

The lower eyelid surgery involves the transconjunctival approach, wherein the incisions are made below the lash line or the insides of the eyelids. This approach helps correct the droopiness of the lower eyelids to show the white portion below the iris and reduce wrinkles as well as sagging in certain cases.

A double eyelid surgery, more commonly known as Asian eyelid surgery involves the creation of an upper eyelid crease to widen the eyes. This procedure is also referred to as the Westernization of the eyelids. A recent surgical procedure for fat reduction from the eyelids involves redistributing the fat through the tear trough which has an added advantage of avoiding the sunken look after the fat has been removed.

Individuals with healthy eyes and a good overall health are the ideal candidates for a blepharoplasty. Local anaesthesia and intravenous sedation are administered to a patient undergoing this cosmetic eyelid surgery.

After the treatment

The surgical procedure for eyelid correction usually lasts for about two hours following which, the patient can return home either on the same day or the next morning. A period of seven to fourteen days is required to recuperate from the operation. Subsequent visits to the hospital are required if there are some stitches that need to be removed.

Eyelid surgery is usually a pain-free experience although it is common to experience bruising around the eye. Some patients may experience redness and swelling around the eye, which subsides within a few days. In case of swelling that persists, bleeding or a sudden painful experience, it is advisable to contact the consulting plastic surgeon.

It is crucial to follow your surgeon’s post-op care instructions for a complication-free recovery. Cold compresses applied to the eye help in reducing the swelling. Dry or Itchy eyes need to be administered eye drops and ointments to prevent infection in the treated area. Exercises and strenuous activities should be put on hold until the surgeon instructs the patient to refrain from them.

Blepharoplasty is the best option to counter the aging process as wrinkles start forming around the eyelids.
