JAWLINE REDUCTION (MANDIBLE CONTOURING, V-LINE SURGERY)
Perhaps the most distinguishing characteristic of a feminine face is the overall face shape, which is largely determined by the shape of the jaw (mandible). While the ideal male facial structure is traditionally thought to include a square chin with a wide, prominent jaw, the ideal female facial structure typically includes a narrow, tapered, delicate jawline shape. Although not everyone is genetically predisposed to having these ‘ideal’ facial structures, jawline reduction surgery allows for the contouring and re-shaping of the jawline area to achieve the aesthetically desirable, feminine “v-line” mandible profile.
Mandible contouring helps to reduce the size and prominence of the jawbone, creating a more narrow, soft, feminine appearance by reshaping the bone around the corners of the jaw, adjusting the shape of the chin, and (when necessary) reducing the large masseter muscles to further narrow the mandible region. Jawline reduction surgery should only be performed by a plastic surgeon with a high level of clinical expertise and experience performing cosmetic facial surgery, such as Dr. Trang Vo-Nguyen (Dr. V), founder and lead plastic surgeon at The Virginia Institute for Surgical Arts, located in Chantilly, Virginia. Dr. V offers mandible contouring surgery as an effective surgical measure for patients seeking to enhance their facial shape by decreasing the width and narrowing the projection of their jawline.
JAWLINE REDUCTION PROCEDURE
Jawline reduction surgery is performed utilizing incisions that are made inside the mouth so that there are no visible scars after the procedure. During your surgery, Dr. V will make incisions between the gum and cheek to access the mandible (jawbone), and will shape the prominent areas of the jawbone in order to achieve a more aesthetically desirable, rounded contour. Once a sufficient amount of bone and muscle has been removed, Dr. V will close the wound with dissolvable stitches. For patients who also require chin shaping, Dr. V will create an incision along the gum line in the front of the mouth in order to shape the soft tissues of the chin to create a naturally feminine appearance. Once the contouring of the chin and mandible has been completed, Dr. V will place a surgical dressing or bandage over the area to minimize swelling and facilitate the healing process.

JAWLINE REDUCTION RECOVERY
After jawline reduction surgery, you can expect a moderate degree of swelling and bruising in the neck and jaw area, which will peak 2-3 days after surgery and should dissipate within the next 2-4 weeks. You will be given a prescription mouthwash to use several times a day in order to keep the incision sites clean and prevent infection. Many patients find softer foods (i.e. pudding, soup, applesauce) the easiest to eat during the first few days after the procedure, and most patients are able to resume their normal daily activities after approximately one week; however, you should avoid strenuous physical exertion for at least 4-6 weeks after surgery. Although you will notice initial improvements in the appearance of your facial structure as swelling begins to subside, it may take 4-6 weeks for the final results and improved contour to become fully visible.
