Cosmetic Dysport Injections
Everyday facial expressions lead to severe wrinkles and creases. As you age, the years of smiling, laughing, frowning, and even yawning become evident in the areas around your mouth, on your forehead, and in the corners of your eyes. At The Virginia Institute, located in Chantilly, Virginia, Dysport® is a very popular procedure used to address these common cosmetic issues. In the last two decades, one of the most successful treatments for facial lines has been the use of muscle relaxing injections such as Dysport® to stop the formation of wrinkles. To achieve the best possible results, Dr. Trang Vo-Nguyen (Dr. V) administers every injection herself and she has extensive experience performing injectable wrinkle treatments. As with any procedure she performs, she will use extreme care and precision when injecting Dysport® to ensure that your targeted wrinkles smooth out perfectly. Dr. V has an in-depth understanding of the relationship between facial muscles and expressions so you can feel confident that your enhancements from Dysport® will be very natural looking.

Dysport vs Botox
BOTOX® (Abobotulinum Toxin A) and Dysport® (Onabotulinum Toxin A) are both brand names of botulinum toxin A protein. BOTOX® was approved by the FDA in 2002 while Dysport® was approved in 2009 and although they work on the same principal of correcting wrinkles by relaxing the muscle that causes them, they are not the same product. Dysport® has been called the “new BOTOX®” and some of the differences between them include:
- Speed of Onset: Dysport takes effect earlier than BOTOX®–1-2 days after treatment vs. 3-5 days for BOTOX®
- Effectiveness: BOTOX® may be more effective for the glabella (the furrows between your eyebrows) while Dysport® is more effective on “crow’s feet” wrinkles. For the forehead, the two appear equally effective
- Treatment Range: Improvements from Dysport® spread farther from the injection site so it is more beneficial when targeting larger areas
- Duration: For some patients, Dysport® results last longer
- Dosing: The dosing units between BOTOX® and Dysport® are different
Supported by years of clinical trials and experience, Dysport® has been used in thousands of treatments safely and effectively for a variety of conditions. Used to treat millions of patients around the world, the active substance in Dysport® is a neuromuscular blocking toxin which acts to block acetylcholine release at motor nerve ends and reduce muscular spasms. Dysport® was initially developed outside of the United States for the treatment of movement disorders such as blepharospasm (involuntary eye closure), cervical dystonia (spasmodic torticollis), hemifacial spasm, and many forms of muscle spasticity. Unlike dermal fillers that correct wrinkles by restoring lost volume, Dysport® temporarily relaxes the facial muscles that actually cause your wrinkles. Dysport® can also temporarily keep the wrinkles from progressing and in some cases, actually prevent them from returning in the future. Many people find that after several Dysport® treatments, they “unlearn” the habit of using the repetitious expressions that originally led to the development of lines and wrinkles.
The Dysport Procedure
Although Dysport® treatments are virtually painless, depending on your threshold of pain some patients prefer to take advantage of a topical anesthetic and possibly a sedative to ensure their comfort. During your procedures, using a fine needle Dr. V will inject very small amounts of Dysport® into your targeted wrinkles and treatment typically requires one injection into each of five points between and above your eyebrows. The process is quick, taking only 10-20 minutes depending on the size and number of treatment areas required and there is no downtime involved with Dysport® so you will be able to resume your normal routine immediately.
