WHAT IS ACNE?
The American Academy of Dermatology highlights acne as the most common skin condition in the United States, and although often associated with the hormonal changes accompanying puberty, adults can suffer from acne as well. Acne can take on the form of red, swollen, and/or pus-filled bumps on the skin, and is caused by bacterial infections that ensue when abnormally heightened levels of sebum (oil) cause the pores of the skin to become clogged. The severity of acne can range from mild, isolated outbreaks, to a more severe or chronic condition.
Acne is most often found on the face, chest, neck, back, and/or shoulders, and can manifest in a number of different ways, including: clogged pores, blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, or cystic lesions (painful red bumps under the skin). In addition to the troubling aesthetic issues created by acne itself, acne scars present an additional category of cosmetic problems, and their indented, pitted, or pockmarked appearance can significantly detract from the overall appearance and health of the skin.

ACNE TREATMENT OPTIONS
At The Virginia Institute for Surgical Arts, located in Chantilly, Virginia, Dr. Trang Vo-Nguyen (Dr. V) is pleased to offer cutting edge treatment options aimed at addressing the root causes of acne, while minimizing the appearance of acne scars and boosting the skin’s radiance and health:
- The Fraxel® DUAL Laser Treatment: this non-ablative laser treatment is FDA approved for the treatment of acne scars, and utilizes patented fractional technology to target damaged, scarred skin with microscopic laser columns that penetrate deep into the skin. Fraxel® DUAL treats only a fraction of tissue at a time and leaves the surrounding tissue intact, which promotes rapid healing as it re-texturizes the skin and stimulates the body’s natural healing process to replace the damaged cells with healthy new skin cells.
- Chemical Peel (derma peeling, chemexfoliation): this minimally invasive skin rejuvenation treatment involves the use of chemical solutions to exfoliate and strip away the damaged, scarred, acne-prone layers of the skin in order to reduce active breakouts and expedite the healing process of acne and acne-related scars. When properly formulated, chemical peels can help to produce smoother, healthier, and more balanced skin.
- Clinical Strength Skincare Products: At the Virginia Institute Surgical Arts, we are pleased to offer our patients the mybody® skincare line, featuring medical grade skincare products that contain a proven balance of high quality ingredients (i.e. oat derivatives, retinol and salicylic acid) that work to treat, soothe and re-condition acne-prone skin. The mybody® acne line of products are uniquely formulated to help patients achieve clear, radiant skin without excessively drying or dehydrating the skin.
- Microdermabrasion: this non-invasive skin rejuvenation treatment uses microscopic crystals to remove the outermost layer of dead (keratinized), flaky skin cells, and in doing so, reveals a more luminous, youthfully radiant complexion. Microdermabrasion is an excellent option for patients seeking to improve the condition of acne scars, or skin that is acne prone, rough, or scaly, while stimulating collagen production and enhancing the overall tone, tightness, and texture of the skin.
