Microneedling has long been considered one of the most effective methods to treat the signs of aging. It is minimally invasive, produces long-lasting results, and has virtually no downtime. At the Virginia Institute for Surgical Arts, we combine microneedling with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy to achieve optimal results.
How SkinPen Microneedling Works
During the treatment, thousands of microscopic punctures are made in your skin using an advanced microneedling device. The controlled injuries caused by the procedure stimulate your body’s wound healing process.
The cytokines and growth factors released during the wound healing process increase the production of collagen and elastin fibers. As a result, your skin becomes younger, softer, smoother, and healthier.
At our practice, we use SkinPen, which is a first-of-its-kind device approved by the FDA, for our microneedling treatments. The device is capable of producing up to 1600 microscopic punctures per second. Due to its variable needle depth, the device can be safely used even on the delicate areas around the eyes and the mouth.
Depending on your age, skin type, and skin condition, you might have to undergo several microneedling sessions to achieve the desired results.

How PRP Therapy Works
Platelet-rich plasma therapy uses the growth factors present in your own blood to rejuvenate your skin. This is why the procedure is also referred to as ‘vampire facelift’.
During the procedure, a small quantity of your blood is drawn. The platelets and plasma are separated from the red and white blood cells through a process called centrifugation.
The platelet-rich plasma concentrate is applied on your skin before the SkinPen microneedling treatment. The microscopic punctures created during the procedure allow your skin to absorb the platelet concentrate completely.
The growth factors present in the PRP concentrate stimulate your skin cells to synthesize collagen and elastin fibers, which are responsible for keeping your skin young and healthy.
You might have to undergo multiple sessions of SkinPen microneedling with PRP treatment – typically spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart – in order to achieve your aesthetic goals.
The best part about PRP therapy is that your own PRP concentrate is used to treat your skin problems. So, there is absolutely no risk of adverse reactions or any undesirable effects for that matter.
The procedure is minimally invasive and takes about 30 to 45 minutes. A numbing cream is applied on your skin to make sure you do not feel any pain or discomfort during the procedure.
