American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery 2014 Report

Cosmetic Procedures | Surgical | Non Surgical | Northern VirginiaAs per a report released by American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the expenditure of Americans on surgical and non surgical aesthetic plastic surgeries during 2013-2014 was more than $12 million signifying a growth rate of 12 percent. Americans spent a larger sum of money on surgical procedures which were carried out by dermatologists, otolaryngologists and board certified surgeons like Dr Trang Vo-Nguyen of Chantilly.

The ASAPS has been compiling data since 1997 about plastic surgeries performed within United States and had sent questionnaires to board-certified physicians and based on their response the final figures have been projected to signify national statistics of demand for these procedures.

Details about most popular surgical plastic surgeries

Final figures that emerged during this study show that liposuction or fat removal is the most popular procedure of all that was performed 342,494 times. This is followed by breast augmentation procedures that stand second in popularity with around 286694 surgeries performed between 2013 and 2014. Two other procedures that gained in popularity during this same period are buttock augmentation that reported increase by 86 percent while labiaplasty had an increase of 49 percent. This trend shows the growing interest of people in these procedures due to greater availability of information and open discussions within citizens of Fairfax, VA.

Top popular facial surgeries in Northern Virginia

The recent technical advances made in facial plastic surgeries have led to less invasive and easy recovery procedures at reasonable costs which have increased the popularity of aesthetic procedures among general public in Northern Virginia and elsewhere. This demand for facial cosmetic surgeries had lead to nationwide growth in eyelid surgeries which is among the third most preferred surgery followed by nose surgery which witnessed growth of 2.9 percent.

Plastic surgeries preferred by men

Men during 2014 underwent nearly 1 million cosmetic surgery procedures depicting an increase of 9.4 percent since last year and a whooping 273 percent increase since 1997 when records were collected for the first time. In Warrenton and other small towns like Middleburg and Manassas a growing economy is encouraging people to start investing in their well being again. Common surgical procedures that are preferred by men comprise of both body related surgeries like liposuction and male breast reduction along with facial surgeries like liposuction, ear surgery and nose surgery.

Most preferred non –surgical procedures

During 2013 both men and women underwent non surgical procedures and spent more than $2.5 billion on injectable procedures like botolinium toxin and hyaluronic acid to improve their aesthetic appearance. In addition to this around $1.9 billion was spent on skin rejuvenation procedures like microdermabrasion, permanent hair removal and also photo rejuvenation. These anti-aging procedures have grown in popularity in even small towns like Loudon County and Fauquier as people have more disposable income now than before. There is also an increase for such procedures in  Prince William, Arlington and Leesburg.

The association has been able to give an accurate picture of changing trends in plastic surgery and also predict shift in demand for particular procedures. In forthcoming years with better information collection questionnaires the association will be able to identify which cosmetic surgery procedures are the safest and also which are likely to provide long term results.

New (ASPS) Report For Facial Plastic Surgery and Med Spa Procedures

ASPSAccording to the latest report released by American Society of Plastic Surgeons about surgical procedures undertaken by Americans in 2014, there has been an overall growth in cosmetic surgeries by 3 percent, since 2013. During the year, nearly 15 million cosmetic procedures have been carried out along with 5.8 million reconstructive surgeries within America alone. With rapid developments made in the area of plastic surgery and their details easily available online, it has become easier for patients to find the right doctors to carry out the changes they require in Northern Virginia. A surprising fact that has emerged about facial surgeries in the recent report is that “eyelid surgery” or “blepharoplasty” is the third most preferred aesthetic surgery among Americans.

Aesthetic facial surgeries preferred by men and women

While women spent around 10.3 million in cosmetic surgeries showing an uptick of 471 percent since 1997, men were not far behind and spent around 1 million on these surgeries. Most preferred facial surgeries by both sexes were eyelid surgeries that totaled 161,389 procedures, followed by nose surgery which grew by 2.9 percent to close at 147,966 procedures. Every year several patients from Chantilly and surrounding areas like Manassas and Warrenton visit clinic of Dr. Trang Vo-Nguyen to consult with him about surgical procedures that can improve their appearance.

Besides going in for fat reduction procedures like liposuction and male breast reduction surgery, men in Middleburg are also spending on facial improvement surgeries. Popular procedures like blepharoplasty which has grown in demand by 34 percent since 2010, and is just behind facelifts which are in top demand at 44 percent due to new non-surgical procedures which can now be performed at half the cost. The reason behind men preferring plastic surgery in places like Loudoun County and Fairfax is their worry that they look too old for their jobs and may lose out on career opportunities due to age.

Non-surgical procedures for face improvement

Botulinum toxin is the most popular of all non-surgical facial spa processes comprising of 3,588,218 in total within 2014, while hyaluronic acid was second in demand with 1696,621 procedures in all. These figures show that general demand for aesthetic procedures in Chantilly and other parts of the nation is growing at a rapid pace. The statistics for 2014 published by ASPS also show that people between 35 and 50 years of age were the largest group which underwent these surgeries while 31 percent of overall procedures were performed on patients between ages of 51 and 64 years.

Two other most preferred non-surgical surgeries performed on both men and women were non-surgical skin tightening techniques like injections, to remove wrinkles and give volume to the face along with microdermabrasion techniques to remove unwanted marks from the face in places like Prince William and Fauquier like other towns across United States. Though these non-surgical procedures can be done in any medical spa too, patients in Manassas can expect better results under board certified doctor like Dr. Trang Vo-Nguyen. Typical surgeries that people undergo for facial rejuvenation in Middleburg are necklift, eyelift and also recontouring of the jaw.

Blepharoplasty | Eyelid Surgery | Plastic Surgery | Northern VirginiaEyes constitute a prominent feature of the face from an aesthetic point of view. If the eyes appear droopy, tired, angry or weary, the overall appearance of the face may look fatigued, old or tired. Therefore, an aesthetic procedure for the eyes to rejuvenate their appearance can have a dramatic positive impact for the entire face. Blepharoplasty, popularly known as eyelid lift surgery, can be performed on the upper or lower eyelids or both, depending on the unique needs of a patient.

The Virginia Institute of Surgical Arts is a state of the art facility for a range of latest, proven and safe facial surgery procedures, including eyelid lift surgery. The practice is headed by Dr. Trang Vo-Nguyen (Dr. V), who is an eminent board certified facial plastic surgeon. Dr. V provides upper and lower blepharoplasty and other procedures to patients in Chantilly, Northern Virginia, Loudoun County, Fairfax, Prince William, Fauquier, Arlington, Middleburg, Leesburg, Manassas, Warrenton, and surrounding communities.

Types of Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty can be broadly classified into upper, lower and functional eyelid surgeries. Droopy eyelids are the leading cause why most patients seek these procedures. However, some patients may require blepharoplasty to remove ptosis, which may affect one or both the eyes. Ptosis may occur by birth or when the edge of the eyelid margin falls from its natural position due to aging, sun exposure, gravitational pull or other factors.

Upper Blepharoplasty

Upper eyelid surgery is designed to elevate the upper eyelid marginally in case loose skin is causing it to droop. An incision will be marked within the natural fold of the upper eyelid and will extend beyond the outer corner into other creases. The surgeon will remove loose skin and fatty tissue through the incision in order to reduce upper eyelid puffiness.

Patients in Chantilly, Northern Virginia, Loudoun County, Fairfax, Prince William, Fauquier, Arlington, Middleburg, Leesburg, Manassas, Warrenton, and nearby areas have an opportunity to receive this procedure from Dr. V.

Lower Blepharoplasty

The surgeon may perform lower eyelid surgery using the transconjunctival technique, which will involve an incision placed inside the lower eyelid. Excess skin and fat will be removed or the fat redistribution will be done through the incision. Some patients may also need correction of muscle laxity through the incision. In some cases, the surgeon may combine traditional lower eyelid surgery with laser treatment to achieve effective tightening of the lower eyelid.

Functional Blepharoplasty

As opposed to aesthetic eyelid surgery, a functional blepharoplasty is performed to correct medical conditions. Most patients may seek this procedure if they are suffering from partial vision obstruction due to loose eyelid skin. Functional eyelid can remove excess skin from the upper eyelid in case it is drooping low enough to cause vision impairment. Some patients may find it difficult to wear glasses or contact lenses due to droopy upper eyelid, which will also require this procedure.

Sometimes the surgeon may recommend a combination of aesthetic and functional blepharoplasty to achieve more comprehensive outcomes. The procedure should ideally be performed by an experienced facial plastic surgeon to achieve safe and desirable outcomes.

Blepharoplasty | Eyelid Surgery | Plastic Surgery | Northern VirginiaEyelid droopiness can occur due to aging, hereditary reasons, sun exposure, or other factors. In some cases, the ptosis or drooping of the upper eyelid may occur by birth. Both men and women may receive blepharoplasty or eyelid lift surgery for the upper or lower eyelids to rejuvenate their facial appearance and make the eyes appear more rested and alert.

The Virginia Institute of Surgical Arts, led by board certified facial plastic surgeon, Dr. Trang Vo-Nguyen (Dr. V) provides state of the art eyelid lift surgery treatments. Dr. V receives patients from Chantilly, Northern Virginia, Loudoun County, Fairfax, Prince William, Fauquier, Arlington, Middleburg, Leesburg, Manassas, Warrenton, and other locations.

Defining Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty is an upper or lower eyelid surgery procedure that involves removal of loose skin, tightening of underlying muscle, and in some cases, reduction or redistribution of fat. Some patients may need only removal of excess skin to restore a more youthful appearance of the eyes, while some others may require muscle tightening. Depending on the patient’s condition, the surgeon will recommend whether upper or lower eyelid surgery or a combination of the two may be needed to achieve best results.

Good Candidates

In most cases, patients who suffer from one or more of the following eye conditions may be suitable candidates for lower or upper blepharoplasty:

  • Appearance of bulges or bags underneath the lower eyelids
  • Excess skin causing skin folds on upper eyelids
  • Dark circles or shadows appearing around the eyes
  • Both lower and upper eyelids are droopy or baggy
  • Occurrence of vision obstruction due to excess tissue

Patients in Chantilly, Northern Virginia, Loudoun County, Fairfax, Prince William, Fauquier, Arlington, Middleburg, Leesburg, Manassas, Warrenton, and nearby areas have an opportunity to receive lower and upper blepharoplasty procedures from Dr. V.

Upper Eyelid Procedure

The upper eyelid tissue may stretch due to loss of natural skin elasticity. The upper eyelids may appear puffy, giving a tired or angry look. Upper eyelid surgery procedure can performed on an outpatient basis using local anesthesia and IV sedation to restore a rested and youthful appearance of the eyes.

In the upper eyelid surgery procedure, an incision will be placed along with the contour of the eyelid crease. The goal is to keep any potential scar inconspicuous as far as possible. The surgeon will remove the excess skin through the incision to make the upper eyelid appear smoother. Fine sutures will be used to close the incisions after the procedure.

Lower Eyelid Procedure

Lower eyelid surgery can reduce the rough and wrinkled appearance of the lower eyelids by tightening the weak tissue and underlying muscle. The surgeon will begin the procedure with an incision either on the skin or inside the eyelid to remove loose skin. Puffy bags beneath the eyes can be eliminated with this surgery. Incisions will be placed right below the eyelid margin to keep the potential scarring inconspicuous.

Following eyelid surgery, most patients are able to return to work within seven to 10 days. The surgeon will recommend sun protection for the eyes for at least three to four months following the procedure.

Non Surgical Facelift | Botox | Thermage | Loudoun County | FairfaxFacelift is a plastic surgery procedure designed to reduce the signs of aging from the face through surgical tightening of loose facial skin and underlying muscle, and reduction or redistribution of excess facial fat. However, some patients may be reluctant to undergo a surgery for an elective aesthetic procedure. In such cases, the surgeon may offer a range of safe and effective non-surgical facelift treatment options.

Dr. Trang Vo-Nguyen (Dr. V) is a well-known board certified facial plastic surgeon providing both surgical and non-surgical facelift treatments. Dr. V receives patients from Chantilly, Northern Virginia, Loudoun County, Fairfax, Prince William, Fauquier, Arlington, Middleburg, Leesburg, Manassas, Warrenton, and surrounding communities.

Anti-Wrinkle Topical Treatments

A variety of anti-wrinkle topical creams and lotions are available in the market today. Some of these treatments can serve as good starting points for candidates with minor wrinkles and fine lines on the face.

Such treatments may also be used from a maintenance point of view, and may help delay the onset of signs of aging. An experienced cosmetic surgeon can recommend the appropriate topical solutions according to the patient’s skin type and the condition of facial aging.

Botox Injections

Botox is one of the most widely popular anti-aging non-surgical treatments for the face. It involves the delivery of botulinum toxin, a powerful nerve immobilizing agent, directly into the wrinkle causing muscles. It immediately causes the muscle to go into a temporary relaxation mode, and the wrinkle will fade away for up to six months.

Dr. V provides this FDA approved injectable facelift solution to patients in Chantilly, Northern Virginia, Loudoun County, Fairfax, Prince William, Fauquier, Arlington, Middleburg, Leesburg, Manassas, Warrenton, and nearby areas. The treatment produces near-instant results and involves almost no downtime.

Thermage

Thermage is an innovative skin tightening procedure based on radiofrequency energy. Thermage is designed make the facial skin tauter and soften the appearance of wrinkles. This non-surgical facelift technique can restore youthful vigor to the sagging and thinning areas of the face. Thermage is the only skin tightening system that has been cleared by the FDA for non-invasive eyelid treatment.

Laser Therapy

Laser therapy involves deliver of low intensity laser energy beams to the deeper layers of the facial skin to stimulate the production of fresh collagen. The heat generated by this non-surgical treatment causes the facial skin to firm up, and moisturizes and oxygenates the skin. The procedure results in toning up of the facial and neck muscles, reduction of wrinkles and enhancement of facial skin texture.

Microcurrent Facelift

Microcurrent is an innovative and increasingly popular non-surgical facelift procedure to promote healthier and younger looking facial skin. The procedure is particularly effective in rebuilding depleted areas of the skin, lifting of sagging muscles, and reduction of wrinkles due to its ability to regenerate tissue.

The process is designed to stimulate cellular physiology and growth. It helps lift eyebrows and jowls, reduce wrinkles and fine lines, improve muscle tone, increase blood flow, and promote skin exfoliation on the face. The procedure causes no damage to the outer layers of the skin.

Facelift Surgeon Loudoun County, Northern Virginia | Fairfax | MiddleburgFacelift Surgery is an invasive plastic surgery procedure which reduces certain signs of facial aging. It is also known as rhytidectomy and involves tightening of the muscles to create desired facial contours and structure. It is an expensive treatment which is not covered by any medical insurance, yet some private financing options are available.

Ideal candidates

Patients who undergo such procedure are usually between the age of 40 and 70. Their goals are to minimize the signs of aging which are developing or have developed. Candidates are required to keep realistic expectations from the treatment and not look at it as a fairy-tale mirror to bring back youth. The treatment only helps to rejuvenate the appearance of the face by removing excess of fat and by tightening of muscles.

Types of facelift surgery

Ideal candidates are tested for some of their traits such as nature of the skin, bone structure, general health and appearance. The surgery is available for people of all ages in both men and women. The type of facelift surgery and method adopted largely depends on individual’s criteria.

Full facelift

Full Facelift is useful for those people who are aged above 60 or 70 who have developed several signs of aging such as sagging, creases under the eyes and excess fat in certain spots. It is performed with a longer incision for reaching larger area for treatment. It is an all-inclusive treatment with maximum difference before and after.

Mid facelift

It is used to gently lift up and tighten the areas in the upper face. Deeper incisions are used to perform the treatment and certain fat removal or implant procedures are used to refine the contours.

Mini facelift

It is used on smaller areas and to provide subtle effects. It is thus known by the name ‘Weekend Facelift’ in Cosmetic Surgery. Incisions are relatively smaller and are used for removal of excess fats and tightening the tissues. It is usually performed on forehead to reduce wrinkles.

Lower facelift

It is a procedure specially designed for eliminating sagging, folds and jowls. The procedure and incision depth are similar to Mini Facelift but this procedure is aimed for lower parts of face.

Threading is another type of Facelift which is used as ‘Quick Fix’ in less extreme cases. Many techniques are available; Endoscopic and Cutaneous Facelift are very common. Side effects are rare. Directions must be followed prior to and post treatment.

Surgeons who perform this treatment make a close observation of the patient’s existing conditions. He will then determine what type of Facelift surgery to perform and provide the patient with additional options. Once the patient is convinced with the treatment plan, the surgery will be performed using appropriate methods.

Northern Virginia Neck Lift Plastic Surgeon | Fairfax | LoundounUsually, a neck lift procedure by Dr Trang Vo-Nguyen in Chantilly, Northern Virginia, Loudoun County, Fairfax, Prince William, Fauquier, Arlington, Middleburg, Leesburg, Manassas and Warrenton lasts for 2-3 hours. Good mental as well as physical health is absolutely necessary for anyone who wishes to have a neck lift done. Some of the common concerns regarding neck lift procedures are as follow:

Loose or weakened neck muscles; turkey wattle

If your neck muscles are loose or weakened, it may cause neck “bands” to appear. Turkey wattle as it is also called, can be corrected by platysmaplasty surgery upon recommendation from your surgeon. In this surgery, incisions will be made either behind the ears or under the chin so that the neck muscle can be accessed by the surgeon for manipulation.

Permanent sutures will be used to keep the tissue in the right position, but modern procedures that are less invasive will see the surgeon make smaller incisions before using an endoscope to complete the surgery. The kind of anesthesia to be used will have to be discussed with the surgeon and one that you’re most comfortable with should be chosen. General anesthesia is ideal if you wish to remain asleep while the procedure is going on. Otherwise, local anesthesia with sedation works fine too.

Excess fat in neck region

Surgeons usually make small incisions under the chin to get rid of the extra fat during liposuction. Along with your neck lift, if you’re undergoing other procedures, surgeons find it easier to start off with liposuction. Pre-operative consultation with the surgeon will help you determine the right manner in which to go about it and how much time it’s going to take. Stiches and bandages will be used after the incisions and it’s crucial to follow the instructions of your surgeon properly to ensure proper care of the stiches and bandages after the surgery.

Excess skin in neck region

Similar to platysmaplasty, incisions for a cervicoplasty will be made by the surgeon to trim parts of your skin before lifting it into the right position. Stiches or tissue glue will be used to secure the area. The procedure will be done between two and four hours, but the complexity of the procedure will determine the right amount of time needed to complete it. Compression bandages will be fitted into the region after the procedure is complete and you will have to wear it for a minimum of a week.

How to prepare for neck lifts?

When you go in for a consultation, the surgeon will tell you what medications must be avoided before the surgery commences. Certain vitamins and medications thin the blood, thus causing increased bleeding. Smokers will have to kick the butt at least a couple of weeks prior to the surgery and must refrain from smoking for another two weeks post surgery. Proper healing is ensured by not smoking.

Even dieting is not advised during this period as proper intake of food is instrumental for proper healing. Comfortable and loose clothing must be worn on the day you go in for surgery. Button-down shirts or blouses must be used so that it won’t have to be pulled over your head or neck. After the surgery is complete, a week is the least you should take off from work. The recovery period will be specified by the surgeon, and following his/her instructions is crucial to get back on track in due course.

It helps patients regain their charm and improve their impression in their social life. The tremendous progress in the field of Modern Science has enabled Cosmetic Surgeons to undertake any complex treatments with thorough investigation, progressive procedures and setup.

Otolaryngology

Otolaryngology is the branch of Medicine which deals with different facial parts along with their individual and interconnected functions. Otolaryngologists are practitioners who provide Medicinal and Surgical treatments for disorders related to Ears, Nose, Throat and other related parts – thus they are otherwise known as ENT specialists.

All Facial Plastic Surgeons specialize in ENT and they thoroughly understand the complex structural anatomy of human face and functions associated with each delicate individual part. They organize the surgical procedures under close supervision to minimize the side effects or any chance of fatal errors when working on interlinked parts.

Basically, facial plastic surgery is of two types – Reconstructive Plastic Surgery and Cosmetic Plastic Surgery. Reconstructive Plastic Surgery is conducted to correct or restore the defects or damages that hinder normal functioning of the facial parts. These defects can be caused by birth or in an event of accident.

Cosmetic plastic surgery is conducted to modify the appearance of facial parts and is generally performed to enhance the beauty of the patients.

Types of treatment procedures

Rhinoplasty: It is also known as Septoplasty and is related to the correction or reconstruction of Nose and its parts.

Blepharnoplasty: It is the surgical modification of upper/lower eye lids.

Rhytidectomy: Also known as Facelifting, it involves the surgical procedure to tighten the skin or muscular tissue to reduce fat and wrinkles.

Liposuction: It involves the removal of excess fat from the lower parts of face.

Implants: It is a surgical procedure that improves the appearance of certain facial parts.

Facial Reconstruction: It is used to correct abnormalities of certain parts or eliminate the defects or damages caused by traumas or prior surgeries.

Surface Epidermal Procedures: It is used to replenish the appearance of skin by peeling etc.

Treatment

The surgery begins once the Patient settles on a plan proposed by the Surgeon. Recovery time varies and it depends on the procedures performed. Maximum duration of hospital stay is usually about a day or two but in many cases hospital stays will not be required.

The surgeon provides certain dos and don’ts which must be strictly followed by patients. General advice is to refrain from intense physical activities for about a week or two as they can traumatize the healing process. Topical lotions will be prescribed for application on areas of incision.

Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)

Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery) Surgeon Northern Virginia | Fairfax VAEyelid surgery or blepharoplasty is one of the most effective procedures to restore a more youthful and rested appearance of the eyes. Dr. Trang Vo-Nguyen (Dr. V) is a board certified facial plastic surgeon, which puts her in a strong position to perform intricate and highly specialized procedures such as eyelid surgery.

Eyelid surgery may be broadly categorized into lower and upper blepharoplasty. A separate classification may also be given to ethnic blepharoplasty because of the typical eye-related features of ethnic patients. Patients in in Chantilly, Northern Virginia, Loudoun County, Fairfax, Prince William, Fauquier, Arlington, Middleburg, Leesburg, Manassas, Warrenton, and nearby areas have an opportunity to receive these surgeries from Dr. V.

Who is Suited for Upper and Lower Blepharoplasty?

Upper eyelid surgery may be more suited for patients who suffer from significant drooping of the upper lids, which can cause an obstruction in their field of vision. Lower eyelid surgery will be more effective in cases where the patient is keen to reduce the appearance of droopy or puffy lower eyelids. In certain cases, the plastic surgeon may recommend both lower and upper eyelid lift to meet the patient’s aesthetic goals.

Lower Blepharoplasty

Lower eyelid lift will usually involve surgical removal of excess fat tissue that exists underneath the eye. When this excess fat is removed along with loose skin, it will help achieve a firmer, smoother, and more youthful looking surface above the cheek area. Furthermore, lower eyelid surgery may be supported by additional procedures such as facial fillers or fat transfer to reverse the appearance of a sunken facial look.

Transconjunctival Blepharoplasty

If the patient does not have a very conspicuous problem of bags beneath the eyes, they may not require tightening of underlying muscles or even removal of excess skin. The procedure will only involve small incisions made inside the eyelid through which the surgeon will remove unwanted pockets of fat. This procedure will avoid any kind of visible scarring.

As an experienced facial plastic surgeon, Dr. V will carefully evaluate whether patient needs upper, lower or transconjunctival eyelid surgery. She receives patients from in Chantilly, Northern Virginia, Loudoun County, Fairfax, Prince William, Fauquier, Arlington, Middleburg, Leesburg, Manassas, Warrenton, and surrounding areas for these procedures.

Upper Blepharoplasty

The appearance of saggy and inflated upper eyelids can be corrected with upper eyelid surgery. The procedure involves removal of loose skin and fat tissue to restore a more refreshed and rested look of the eyes.

The procedure involves an incision that is placed along the natural crease of the upper lids to make the scarring inconspicuous. Loose skin in the upper lids that may be contributing to vision obstruction as well as a saggy or tired look will be trimmed away. Muscle tightening may also be performed in some cases.

Asian Blepharoplasty

Asian upper lid anatomy will typically differ from that of the Caucasian eyelid. Nearly half of the Asian patients may have little or no crease showing in their upper eyelid. Customized eyelid procedure designed to enhance the appearance of the eyelid may be performed.
