Reverse the Signs of Aging and Lift Your Appearance
Your face is one of the first things people notice and since first impressions are lasting, it is unfortunate when your face is also the first area to show the signs of aging. Facial aging depends on many factors including genetics, environment, gravity, medical situations, sun exposure, and your everyday facial expressions.
As your skin ages, it loses elasticity which causes your face to lose shape and definition. Deep facial creases and sagging skin is not the image you want to convey and with all of the options available today, you no longer have to live with the changes that make you feel and look older than you really are.
A traditional facelift, also known as rhytidectomy, is the most effective technique available to reverse the signs of aging in the mid and lower portions of your face. By repositioning the underlying foundation, contouring the lax skin and muscles, and raising the soft tissues in your cheek and mid-face without stretching the overlying skin, a traditional facelift can turn back the clock on your appearance by as much as 10-15 years.
If you are at a time in your life when you are ready to consider a traditional facelift, please call and let us set up your consultation. Dr. V is a nationally recognized leader in the field of facial plastic surgery and people travel locally and from around the globe to take advantage of her skills and expertise. She will make you feel like you’ve gotten a celebrity facelift when you walk out of her office!
What Is A Facelift?
Facelift surgery or rhytidectomy is a cosmetic surgical procedure which reduces the facial signs of aging such as wrinkles and folds. It helps to improve the overall look of the face and dramatically increases the cosmetic appeal in aged people. It is known as a facelift because of the method by which a cosmetic surgeon will lift and tighten up the facial muscles by removing excess fat. The resulting appearance will be more youthful and rejuvenating with pleasant contours.
The procedure involves re-contouring the loose skin and muscles, re-positioning the underlying fat and tissue, and restoring volume to the cheeks and mid-face without causing excessive stress to the overlying skin. A typical facelift can take several years off the patient’s face. The goal is to meet the patient’s needs and expectations from the procedure without compromising safety and customizing the treatment in accordance with the unique facial features and anatomy of the patient.
Facelift surgery demands expert knowledge not just in surgical techniques but also in facial anatomy. Dr. V’s board-certified qualifications, extensive training and decades of experience as a facial plastic surgeon place her among an elite group of surgeons in Virginia.
Get To Know the Different Types of Facelifts
With advancements in cosmetic surgery, numerous adaptations of facelift procedures are available today and each surgical method has its own benefits. The traditional techniques effectively achieve the removal of extra skin but what distinguishes the variations in facelifts is the approach to the deeper soft tissue structures. Dr. V will discuss your concerns, requirements and aesthetic goals to find the best facelift surgery for you.
Traditional Facelift
The traditional or standard facelift technique is designed to treat the lower two-third portion of the face as well as the neck. It involves removal of excess fat and skin, tightening the loose muscles, and re-draping the skin on the face smoothly. This procedure can be used to correct conditions such as sagging skin, excess fat pockets, droopy jowls, lines beneath lower eyelids, tired or old looking mid-face, lines around the mouth and double chin.
Endoscopic Facelift
This facelift procedure involves the use of a miniature camera that is inserted underneath the skin to help identify problem areas and perform corrective surgery. The endoscopic technique is minimally invasive to ensure that the recovery period is shorter, surgical risk is reduced and scars are negligible. Tiny incisions are made using this technique to help lift the upper face and cheeks. This technique can help improve conditions such as droopy brows, loose skin over cheeks, frown lines, sagging midface and jowls, and lines around the mouth.SMAS (Superficial Musculoaponeurotic System) Facelift
SMAS technique is more popular today because the results are more substantive and yet natural looking. Dr. V will lift and tighten the underlying facial muscle structure apart from removing excess skin. Results are more natural and last for a longer time with an SMAS facelift.Deep Plane Facelift
The deep plane facelift targets deeper facial tissue layers to create a natural, youthful lift in the jawline and cheeks. Dr. V uses this advanced technique to reduce skin tension, enhance durability, and minimize scarring. Ideal for long-lasting rejuvenation, this technique is popular for delivering comprehensive results that maintain a refreshed, lifted appearance.Cutaneous Facelift
This old facelift technique involves only surgical excision of loose facial skin. Dr. V will lift the skin gently, remove excess skin and suture it tightly at a raised position. No changes to the facial muscular structure are involved, which allows for the creation of more natural-looking results.
S-Lift
The S-Lift is a minimally invasive procedure designed to provide subtle results. During this procedure, Dr. V will lift the lower face and neck with smaller incisions, making recovery easier and reducing facelift scars. This style of facelift surgery is ideal for individuals with mild to moderate signs of aging. The S-Lift enhances facial contours without the extensive downtime of more traditional procedures, making it one of the best facelifts since it allows patients to return to their daily activities sooner.SubPeriosteal Facelift
The subperiosteal facelift targets the area beneath the periosteum, or the layer covering the bones of the face. During this procedure, Dr. V lifts sagging tissues while preserving facial volume, resulting in a more youthful appearance. By repositioning the underlying structures, this facelift surgery effectively addresses drooping cheeks and deep nasolabial folds. This technique is particularly beneficial for individuals with significant volume loss- offering long-lasting and natural-looking results.Mini Facelift
Some patients may be looking for very subtle improvements to the face or just a maintenance procedure to delay the onset of more obvious signs of facial aging. In such cases, the surgeon may recommend a partial or mini facelift procedure, such as a thread facelift, which can be performed using local anesthesia. Recovery is faster, risks are minimal, and results are more natural looking with this procedure. What more can you ask for?Liquid Facelift
Some patients may seek a facelift without surgery while recognizing that the results will not be permanent with such a procedure. Dr. V may recommend a customized combination of Botox and facial filler injections. FDA-approved dermal fillers such as Juvederm, Restylane, Sculptra, or Radiesse may be used in a targeted manner to achieve a subtle lift and minimize facial aging.Discover Our Facelift Before and After Photos

Facelift Surgery Treats…
Facelift surgery effectively addresses several signs of aging, including loose, sagging skin, jowls, and fat deposits, as well as creases under the eyes and around the mouth. It also lifts sagging midface areas and reduces double chin appearance, resulting in a smoother, more youthful facial contour.
Saggy or Droopy Facial Skin
Saggy or droopy facial skin can significantly impact one’s appearance- often leading to feelings of self-consciousness. Factors such as aging, sun exposure, and lifestyle choices contribute to the loss of skin elasticity. Facelift surgery effectively restores firmness and tightness, repositioning skin and underlying tissues for a more youthful look. This revitalization not only enhances aesthetics but also improves overall facial harmony.
Fine Lines and Deep Wrinkles
Fine lines and deep wrinkles are common signs of aging that can affect one’s confidence. These creases often develop due to a combination of sun damage, repetitive facial movements, and decreased collagen production. A facelift can significantly reduce the appearance of these lines by tightening the skin and smoothing out facial contours. Patients often enjoy a refreshed and youthful look following the procedure, enhancing their overall facial expression.
Lack of Facial Volume
As we age, we may experience a noticeable decrease in facial volume, leading to a hollow appearance. This loss can result from various factors, including fat redistribution and diminished collagen production. If you have experienced a loss of facial volume, a facelift surgery, particularly when combined with fat grafting or fillers, can restore your lost volume and enhance your facial contours.
Facial Folds
Facial folds, such as nasolabial folds and marionette lines, can create an aged or tired look. These creases develop as a result of aging, sun damage, and decreased skin elasticity. If you have these concerns, a facelift addresses these folds by lifting and tightening the skin and underlying tissues. This rejuvenating procedure smooths out facial contours- resulting in a more youthful and refreshed appearance that can significantly enhance self-esteem.What Makes Dr. V the Best Choice in North Virginia

Am I A Good Candidate For Facelift Surgery?
If you are interested in improving the appearance of sagging facial skin, conspicuous wrinkles and fine lines, facelift plastic surgery may be an ideal choice. You should ideally have some degree of skin elasticity to achieve sustainable results. The underlying facial bone structure should be strong enough to support and contribute to a successful outcome. In short, you are an ideal candidate for facelift surgery if:
- You are in good general health and do not smoke.
- Experience issues with sagging skin and a decrease in skin firmness.
- Committed to adhering to the pre and post-operative care plan.
- Have realistic expectations regarding the outcomes.
Facelift Surgery Risks
While most facelift surgeries deliver highly satisfying results, they do carry some risks. However, Dr. V’s extensive experience significantly reduces these potential complications. For patients with anesthesia sensitivities, Dr. V carefully evaluates medical history to minimize adverse reactions. Strict adherence to advanced hygienic protocols ensures that the risk of infection is kept to a minimum. Though complications like scarring, hematoma, or nerve damage are possible, Dr. V’s expert techniques help mitigate these risks, reducing the likelihood of needing corrective procedures.
Your Facelift Recovery
The time required for recovery from a facelift will vary depending on the extent of treatment. During the first few days, you will be required to change your bandages regularly, maintain drainage tubes until their removal and use of compression masks. Dr. V will also provide tips and guidance regarding keeping the faces from getting wet.
Subsequently, the patients must ideally follow Dr. V’s guidance regarding sleeping in a specific position throughout the initial recovery period. Mentoring will be provided according to your needs, activities and routine. Make-up and beauty products should not be used until the green light is given by Dr. V.

Combine Your Facelift With Other Procedures
Although a facelift may take years off your appearance, it is important to recognize what it can and cannot do. A facelift primarily corrects the lower half of your face while a midface lifts your cheeks and lower eyelids. Neither technique corrects the signs of aging in the upper face, however. That’s why many of our patients at The Virginia Institute for Surgical Arts combine procedures for optimal transformation of their lower face and neck.
Brow Lift
A brow lift elevates sagging brows and smooths forehead wrinkles, creating a refreshed, alert expression. When you pair a brow lift with your facelift surgery, you’ll receive enhanced overall facial rejuvenation- delivering balanced, youthful results across both your upper and lower facial areas.
Blepharoplasty
Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, removes excess skin and fat from the eyelids, reducing puffiness and sagging. When combined with a facelift, blepharoplasty enhances facial harmony by rejuvenating both the eyes and lower face.
Neck Lift
A neck lift removes loose skin and excess fat, defining your jawline. When combined with a facelift, it provides comprehensive rejuvenation for both the lower face and neck, enhancing overall facial harmony and a youthful appearance.
FAQs
Direct sun exposure should be avoided for several months after a facelift. If the healing scars are exposed to direct sunlight, it can cause darkening of the healing area or hyper-pigmentation. The sun can cause damage to the delicate post-surgical skin on a long-term basis, creating deeper facial lines and a more leathery skin appearance. The patient should wear sunblock SPF 15 or higher for the first few months when going out in the sun.
A facelift is typically performed on patients in the age group of 35 to 65. The ideal age to perform a facelift may be 35 to 50 when the skin elasticity is stellar. In this age group, patients usually opt for a combination of facelift and liposuction. Younger patients can benefit from a maintenance lift to delay the onset of conspicuous aging signs.
This can depend on an individual case and the particular surgical technique employed by the surgeon. Dr. V usually ensures that the hairline does not change for her patients in Chantilly, Northern Virginia, Loudoun County, Fairfax, Prince William, Fauquier, Arlington, Middleburg, Leesburg, Manassas, Warrenton, and other areas.
Drains may be placed in some cases to remove excessive blood and fluid after a facelift. If the procedure is extensive, and takes two to three hours or more, placing a drain may be necessary. Compressive garments can be used in many cases to help prevent the accumulation of fluid.
A mini facelift surgery can be recommended if the patient wants a maintenance procedure, and does not suffer from significant facial skin laxity. The mini facelift will usually involve reduction of excess skin, but not the lifting of underlying deeper tissue.
Most patients will experience mild bruising and swelling for the first week. The patient may be able to go back to work within 10 to 14 days. After this period, regular activities and exercise can be resumed. However, heavy lifting and strenuous activities that cause a pull on the neck should be avoided for about four to six weeks.
An experienced plastic surgeon will place the incisions in discrete areas to keep the scars inconspicuous. Scars will mature within a period of six months to a year after the surgery. The healing of scars can vary from one patient to another, depending on individual healing characteristics.
