Types of Brow Lift
If the brows have become furrowed and the skin is drooping over the upper eyelids, it may need to be corrected both for cosmetic reasons as well as to restore clear vision. Brow lift procedure may be performed independently or in combination with facelift or other upper face procedures. Two main types of brow lift techniques include the following:
Classic Lift: This technique involves a single incision that begins at the level of the ears, and continues up around the hair line. The surgeon will take care to keep the incision hidden in the hair life so that the scar remains inconspicuous.
Endoscopic Lift: This technique involves multiple small incisions in the scalp. The plastic surgeon will insert a miniature camera or a scope on the end of a slender tube through an incision, and introduce another surgical device to make the necessary changes. Smaller incisions in this technique make it less invasive, resulting in quicker recovery, and minimal scars.
Brow Lift Consultation
Patients are advised to be candid about their innate desire and need for a cosmetic surgery during the initial consultation. This will help the surgeon recommend appropriate facial procedures to meet the patient’s expectations. The surgeon will also evaluate the general health condition and medical history of the patient. The entire forehead area will be evaluated along with muscular resilience and skin elasticity. The patient may clarify all concerns and doubts about the procedure at this stage, and make an informed decision about the surgery.
Preparation
Any facial plastic surgery procedure requires minor adjustments to the lifestyle. If the patient is a smoker, an important adjustment will be to quit smoking for several weeks before and after the surgery. Aspirin and other anti-inflammatory medications may have to be stopped temporarily. Patients with long hair that fall in the front may have to get them trimmed. Patients with very short hair may have to grow and maintain hair in a way to hide potential scars.
Brow lift is a relatively minor surgery, but any surgery still needs all the necessary pre-op precautions and preparations. Before leaving home, the patient should keep a stock of gauze and clean towels. Sufficient quantity of ice cubes, containers to carry ice or cold water and plastic covers to hold ice should be kept at home. Pillows may be necessary if the surgeon recommends the patient to keep the head elevated for a few days.
Recovery
Recovery will depend on whether brow lift is performed alone or along with other procedures, as well as the technique used. Stitches will be removed within a week in most cases. Patients can expect to have bruising and swelling in and around the area of surgery for a few days. Pain relievers may be prescribed for a few days.
Some patients may also experience tingling sensation and numbness for a few days, which will go away on its own. Most patients can resume their regular activities within a week to 10 days. The surgeon will instruct the patient to avoid vigorous physical exercise or heavy lifting for the first few weeks.
Risks
Side effects with brow lift are minimal and temporary. In rare cases, complications such as infection, conspicuous scarring, distorting of eyebrow movement or loss of sensation on the surgical site may occur. A revision surgery may be performed in such condition.
